See you...!

This is probably the last time I am going to post things in the blog. The semester is finishing and now it's time to rest and enjoy the summer to return in September to try our best again.

So, this subject has come to an end and I would like to explain some of my feelings now we have finished.

Since the first day, I have liked and trusted on this subject. From the first moment, it has been a different subject, with a different methodology than the other ones. And I think that is what makes it special.

I have learned many things, important things that I am sure that are going to help me in my future, such as the importance of counsellors, the Tutorial Action Plan, interviews, or many other things related with guidance and counselling. But it is not just that I have learned, is that I have learned enjoying. I will never forget my project of “Learn to live together”, because till now, it is the activity I have done I have liked the most, I have never been so comfortable preparing and presenting a project.

The truth is that when we found out that the teacher was taking sick leave, we were sad because we were all enjoying and learning a lot in this subject, (we hope everything is going well). But, at least we had time to do and learn many things. And, as another teacher came, the subject did not end, and we continue doing activities, as I have been telling you in the posts.

If you remember I started my blog talking about the first day of class, the activity we did for defining “School guidance and counselling”, that no one in the class could answer it. And today, I can say you that after this four months I have no doubt on what school guidance and counselling means. School Guidance and Counselling cannot be explained just with a definition, is more than that, but we could sum it up saying that is an educational mission that focuses on the personal/social, educational, and career development of all students. I do not want to talk too much, because I suppose that if you have arrived at this post it is because you have read the previous ones, in which I have not stopped talking about this.

I also want to say that if someday a teacher the first day of class tells you that if you agree on implementing a new methodology say yes, you can learn more than you imagine. And if by chance, you have the same teacher as me, when the first day he asks you if you are willing to work in the same way as me, do not even think about saying no.

I hope you have enjoy reading me as much as I have enjoyed writing for you, readers.

Thank you very much for reading my posts, if someday you want to say me something, you can write a comment or write me an email (you can see it on my profile), I will be happy to help you.

It has been a magnificent pleasure to share with you all the things I have been learning, the projects I have done, and my feeling about it.

I do not want to say Goodbye, I prefer saying……

Attention! Importance of teacher's protection...

Wednesday 16th

Today has come Laura Sequera, a teacher from the department of Guidance and Counselling. She works on the protection of teachers and she has ilustrated us with her knowledge.

She has show us the different rates in public schools of cybernetic, physical, psychological, verbal harassment, etc, by students, and even by the parents. Therefore, she has give us advise for acting in different situations.

I think this has been a very interesting talk, because I have learned things that would help me in the future.

Above we see the screenshot were Laura's protection project appears. I leave you here the link in case you want to know more about this topic: https://anpemadrid.es/web+defensor-del-profesor-id=1

Practice on design of tutorial activities

Wednesday 9th

Today we have done a practice in which we had to design an activity of tutorial activities.
We could choose among different topics and we chose: 'knowing the students', in students of first and second of primary education.

We divided our work on seven parts: objectives, development, materials, time, course, observations and evaluation or indicator of success. I attach you here the explanation of each of the parts. (It is in spanish because the teacher told us so).

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Monday 14th

In this sesion we have done the same practice than the other day, but this time of 5th and 6th grade of primary education. We chose the topic: beginning of the course.

We divided our work in the same way as the other practical activity (objectives, development, materials, time, course, observations and evaluation or indicator of success). You can see below the explanation of each of the parts. (It is in spanish because the teacher told us so).

_________________________________________________________________________________

These two activities have helped me to stand in front of a case in which I have to prepare a real activity, giving use to my creativity and seeing that preparing these types of activities involve preparing all in detail, not just describing it.

What about interviews?

Monday 23rd

Today has come Xavier, the teacher that will sustitute my teacher Miguel, until he is able to come. He has talked us about how is going to be organized the rest of the semester: we will have to do two projects: one is related with interviews, and another wth tutorial action.

He has explained us the first one, we will have to do by groups two interviews. For this, he has give us material for knowing how to do it, and for understanding how an interview is done. He has show us projects from other students so that we understand it better. The last day for handing out this project would be Monday 14.

I attach here the links of the material we have for the interviews, in case you want to see them:

https://cv4.ucm.es/moodle/pluginfile.php/5145960/mod_folder/content/0/Interview.pdf?forcedownload=1
(presentation about important aspects of interviews).

Wednesday 25th

The class from today has been also about interviews, but with a new powerpoint, this one talks about more specific detailes of interviews, technique at the service of mentoring. I leave you below the link so you can also see the information

https://cv4.ucm.es/moodle/pluginfile.php/5145960/mod_folder/content/0/La%20entrevista%20OyAT%20%28PROF%29.ppt?forcedownload=1

We have not finish the presentation, so next day we will continue.

After a looooong weekend.......

Monday 7th

In this class we have been working on last day’s presentation, and he has also explained us the evaluation criteria for the project: after delivering the poject to the teacher, we should fill out a sheet with the evaluation of our work (autoevaluation), and then he will fill the same sheet, taking into acount our work.

At the end of the class, me and my group asked the teacher some questions of the project, because we have already prepared the interview, but we wanted the teacher to see it, for knowing if the material is already correct for going to the following step: doing the interview. He told us that he really like the topic of our presentation: ‘Working for living or living for working’, and he gave us some tips for improving our questions of the interview. So we will change some things and send them to him, until they are prepared for being part of the interview.

_________________________________________________________________________________

I would like to attach here the videos of the interviews, but as the interviewed have not been told that this will be published, I cannot. So, if you want to see the videos, you can write me a comment in this entry and I will see if I can send it to you.

What I can attach is the document with all the important information of the interwiew:

https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/ui=2&ik=8dfb84c04e&view=att&th=1636845e6fe562ea&attid=0.2&disp=inline&safe=1&zw

Wednesday 23rd

The teacher put the videos of the interviews of each of the groups of the class and commented them, he has showed us our mistakes, so that each of us can learn from our mistakes and our classmate's ones.

From my point of view doing this activity has helped us for gaining experience on interviews, and it has been interesting all the things we have learned doing them and seeing other people's ones.

A small stoppage, some things change..

After Easter Holidays we are here again, prepared for continuing with the lesson, but there are some inconveniences...

Wednesday 4th, Monday 9th and Wednesday 11th.

We did not have class because the teacher was not able to come.

Monday 16th.
A new teacher came and talked about important aspects of School Guidance, the class was in spanish because the teacher was not bilingual. It was like a review of all we have seen.

Wednesday 18th.
Today the same teacher as the last day has come, the class has been about respiration exercises, to know how to concentrate and remain relaxed.

We still do not know who the new teacher will be, because todays’ one has told us that he will not be with us the rest of the days. Next day a new teacher wil come.

Learn to live together

Wednesday 14th

Today the teacher has explained us a new project that we are going to do. We could choose among different topics: : teaching to be a person, teaching to think, to live together, to make decisions, etc. After choosing the topic, we must design three activities to work in the chosen axis. One to develop with the students, another with the teaching team and another with the families, and we shoul do one of them in class. After preparing all this, we are going to present our project to the class.

We did not know what topic to choose, first of all we chose ‘to make decisions’, but finally we decided that the most interesting one was ‘learn to live together’. As we had to do one of the three activities, we chose the one for parents, because, we are used to see activities or games for children, so we thought it was a better idea doing something with parents.

So, for today nothing more, we have organised our ideas, but for the next day we will bring information, to start shaping the project.

Monday 19th

We have brought information, and new ideas. We already know the activities we are going to carry out. And the introduction about Tutorial Action is already done, for doing it we read an article: "La Acción Tutorial en Educación" by  Morales Moreno, A.B. This article explain us some things to put into practice the Tutorial Action. The article said that the tutorial action is a process, inside the school guidance, that complete the docent action and try to attend the diversity of all the students. For carrying out the tutorial action we need some things, one of them is to coordinate the whole educational community. Another one is to create a Tutorial Action Plan (PAT), a document in which there are objectives, member's functions, programs and activities. On the PAT we have three levels of intervention: students, faculty of teachers and other institutions. The PAT also has a part of evaluation in which there are three types of evaluating our students: first evaluation (at the beginning of the course), formative evaluation (during the whole learning process) and final evaluation (at the end of the course). The Tutorial Action has some lines to follow. One of these lines is to live together that we have used for doing our new project.

We just need to do the details and to practice the presentation because it will be next day. We decided not to use any type of electronic plataform, so we will do everything with cardboards. We will stay after class for having everything prepared.

Wednesday 21st

Today we have presented our project. I leave you above the explanation of each of the  three activities.

This is a school. In each window we can see important things of each of the activities (parents, teachers and students). As the one at the left.

We are going to start explaining students’ activity for acquiring our goal: making them learn to live together.

The main objective is that students interact with each other, respecting everyone and putting into practice various values that everyone should treat, for example: generosity, help, empathy, responsibility, etc. They must be able to live together, all this will help us to promote equality on them, inclusion. To carry out this learning model, we would like to do group activities in the classes, and so that they interact with everyone, we would like to change the members of the groups every week. So, there will be activities every week, for example: songs in which they tell everything they have learned during that week, poems, drawings, etc. The individual activities will be presented to all the classmates, so that students get used to talk in public.

For example, we have thought of an activity that consists on asking to our students to make a drawing of the members of the small group they belong to on that week, as we have already said, this group will be changed every week in order to establish a good relationship between all students and to promote inclusion, so they will have to repeat the drawing as soon as they change the group. We think that the pictures will help us to see the students’ perspective about their classmates and if it exists any type of discrimination, try to solve it as soon as possible. The drawings could also be about their families, to try to teach children that the family does not have to be a father and a mother, so that from a young age they know the importance of inclusion to diversity. Teach them for example that there are different family structures and that sex does not define gender. They are not simply things that should know, but things that can be found in every class, so, to avoid any discrimination when encountering cases that they are not used to, we must normalize it so that they can live together, without mattering nothing more but the comfort of every student.

On our practical case, we have a transsexual girl on class, she will be called in the way she feels more comfortable. But, we do not need a transsexual girl or boy for showing the students that they have to respect diversity. Of course, so that this girl is comfortable, everything as possible should be done, connecting students, families and teachers, everyone must contribute everything as possible to prevent, problems and bullying among other things.

Although, to motivate the students, there will be a tree on the classroom wall. On this tree, each student will have a monkey, as the week goes by, and things go well, the monkey will go up. And at the end of the week the monkeys of all students should be at the top of the tree. The things that will be valued for the monkey to climb will be for example: if they interact well with their classmates, if they respect each other and share their things, etc. They must do actions to raise, and once they reach the top, they will have kind of prize.

Another similar thing, would be that each student at the beginning of the week has a flower without petals. As the days go by, or at the end of the week, the children will add petals. Each petal has a value: responsibility, respect, generous, care, empathy and interact with the partners. Before leaving on the weekend, the children should add petals to their flowers, depending on how their week has gone, ideally, they should have the whole flower.

Now we are going to proceed to explain the part that would fall to the team of teachers:

Teachers are an essential part on the children’s development, so that is why we consider this activity is also very important to be done. The activity that we have to work with other teachers is about “to live together” and will consist of a meeting in which we will treat mainly the topic of inclusion. Firstly, teachers should define or explain what they understand of the word inclusion, talk about their point of view about some topics like the homophobia, racism, and other types of possible discrimination, to see if the perspectives are similar and agree on if they should teach any values in their classes and which of them. Then, the teachers will have to describe their points of view of our students, their weakness and their strengths, trying to reach an agreement on how to solve the weaknesses. We will also show them the kid’s drawings of their classmates and of their families, to know also their opinion about it. Maybe with all our points of view it is easier to help any student that has a problem.

Finally, we will explain them the case of a transsexual student, and try to create classes with innovative and inclusive activities to obtain every kid feels comfortable, and as we have said in the previous activity, the groups should be changed every week in order to every student talks to all. Every student must take part on the activities that the teacher proposes without shy, or fear about what they can think the rest of the class about what they say.

These are some proposals that can be made in some subjects: In arts and crafts: The kids should make a drawing of their classmates to observe as they see them if there is a good relationship of if there is any problem with any learner, because the children make this drawing unconsciously and the teachers should perceive if there is something strange, and other picture of their family and make them explain why they have drawn like that, how they feel at home, also to help us to decide if the familiar relationship is favourable for the development of the child. In physical education: whenever they have to make any sport the teacher should mix girls and boys in the same groups in order to have balanced sports teams, and also motivate all of them to participate in the class, because as we have said, some students do not participate in class because they are shy or insecure because of what can think the others about them. And in other subjects, try to make similar activities that imply working on groups promoting the inclusion which it is our main goal.

And finally, and not less important, we are explaining parents’ activity.

Our intention is to organise a meeting with the parents of the students at the beginning of the scholar year. In this meeting we will show and explain them what activities the teachers will develop with the students to work on the topic “teaching to live together”. Also, the purpose of this meeting will be talking with parents about inclusivity and the special needs of every child, highlighting some of the values that our school defends and promotes.

The meeting will have some main points that the tutors will have to cover up, in first place they will talk about general issues, then about inclusivity, in third place about some specific cases and in last place we will show them the activities the teachers are going to organise to get to the main objective.

With general issues we mean it is important to clarify parents that in our school we want to instil in them values of respect and love. This means that one of our main purposes is to create a school in which every child respects the others. Promoting these values will create a comfortable climate in the class, this will benefit every single student.

Talking about inclusivity, we want to advertise them that in this school children with some special needs will be admitted. So, there is a possibility that in their son or daughter class it can be a kid with special needs. The rest of the students will have to empathise with them and give them help when needed. Also, it is important to highlight that those students who make rude comments or actions to those that have special needs, will be punished. All students of the class should feel part of a team, not having to worry about their intellectual capacity, their gender or race. With inclusivity we also want to talk about the different family structures, transmitting our acceptance.

In the specific cases section, they will be advertised about some children and what it’s their situation. This is made to prevent future problems with the students. We will talk about a case that concerns us, a transsexual student. The name of this student cannot be revealed, but they have to know this situation in case someday their children get home talking about this and asking questions. Of course, we recommend parents to transmit them acceptance towards the situation. When reading the class list, this kid will be named as the way he feels identified. We are going to remember parents that if any of their children need any specific measure, or they think it is important for us to know about their particular situation, we will be pleased if they let us know.

One of the main activities to deal with the chosen topic is the control notebook. We will always like to have communication between families and teachers, so we find interesting having a control notebook in which each teacher will write about the different values of the children in all subjects, accepting also parents’ comments. The values that will be qualified are the next ones: care, responsibility, respect, generosity, interaction with partners and empathy. These values will be evaluated by: improvable, good and excellent. They should try to improve among time passes. As we mentioned before, students have a tree through which their monkey will try to reach the top doing good things, the same happens with the flower, that will have to end up full of petals. But these things are only seeing by the students, that is why we think is a good idea having this notebook to make parents know everything.

I really like this activity, I enjoyed a lot doing it, and I feel like a real tutor. Without a doubt the activity that I liked the most about the degree.

The teacher told us that we have made a very good job, and that motivate us a lot.

Two wheels of tutorial action

Monday 12

The role of the tutor has been the topic of today. We have done a dinamic activity in which our teacher splited us in two circles and we had to answer some questions in three minutes each. When the time finished, the people who was on the inside circle had to change their position with the partners next to them. With this methodology every member of the class worked with different people for each question, one circle was the one which always were moving and the other one wait on their sit for a new partner to work with.

We have to answer questions related with: agent of guidance; recipient of guidance; a collaborator of the counselling), the intellectual and technical preparation and the attitudes and personal characteristics of tutors.

In school guidance the tutor is a collaborator of the counselling and psychopedagogical intervention and has a relevant place because he is the one who takes the initiative and is responsible of developing in the correct way the PAT and act according to its results, but he also needs the help of the guidance team for choosing specific measures.

The tutor should have specific characteristics, both professional and personal. He should be a qualified teacher, able to teach students through different methodologies, responsible of the interaction and motivation of students, he should be able to detect problems and to apply the specific techniques to solve it. In terms of personal features; a tutor should be a balance person, mature, transmitting stability to their students, sensitive to perceive problems of students and to solve it, affective and friendly because we cannot forget that the tutors are in class for helping the students and they need to be cautious people but also sensible and affective.

At the end of the class the teacher took our activity and started asking randomly and we put in common our ideas.

Tutorial Action Plan on practice!

Wednesday 7th

Today we have learned through a different methodology.  The topic was the activities that we can do for using the Tutorial Action Plan.

First of all, our teacher explained us some concepts supporting on a prezi (https://prezi.com/2mtv3mxbiufj/tutorial-action-plan/). The concepts were about the different organisms that participate on the Tutorial Action. For using it correctly, we need a PAT (Tutorial Action Plan), headmaster, consejo escolar, CCP, head of studies, guidance team, teachers/tutor, teaching team, parents and students. These members constitute the educational community that is the most important part of a Tutorial Action Plan.

Then, six volunteers went to the centre of the class and the rest of the class were put around the six volunteers in another circle. The ones that were in the middle had a paper with some parts of the definition of guidance, the rest of the class had different situations that fit with one part of the definition. Each person of the class started telling the sentence of the situation they had, the ones that were in the centre had to fit that situations on the part of the definition.

I was not one of the six people in the centre, but we all could see the difficulty to ordering the information in a PAT, it seemed very messy because some situations fit on many definitions.

Here you can see the activity with all the functions and parts of the definition ordered:

Professionals.... Our first real case!

Monday 5th

Today we have come across the first real case of a child that needs support. He has difficulties with oral and written expression,  we have had to make decisions about what measures we would take.

I like this activity, but it was a little bit difficult to decide which measures choose for helping the child, but as we have the material for deciding this, I think it was not so bad.

You can see here the case of Javier, the child with difficulties: https://cv4.ucm.es/moodle/mod/resource/view.php?id=3257485

After reading that document and studying the case, we make some decisions, answering the questions the teacher told us. Below you can see all this information.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

MEASURES OF ATTENTION TO DIVERSITY CASE STUDY

Javier is a 6th grade of Primary student in a state-funded School in Madrid. It is a School with three classrooms per level. The approximate school population is 1100 students in a neighborhood of upper-middle class. Taking into account the report below, the tutor and the teaching team have to design and provide the most appropriate measures of attention to diversity at the beginning of the academic year. They have the support of the guidance department and the EOEP of the zone, if necessary. In order to establish the measures of attention suitable, the following work script is proposed:

  1. Read the report carefully.

  1. Describe what would be the main goal to attend this specific case.

Javier has difficulties on language acquisition and from a social point of view he has problems when it comes to interact with his partners; so, we think that the main goal for attending this case would be developing linguistic skills, including oral and written expression, in a fluently way, so that little by little he fills more confidence and comfortable, this will lead to an autonomous child with critical thinking that makes his own decisions.

  1. Decide what kind of measures of attention to diversity are indicated:

      a. Ordinaries

      b. Extraordinaries

We find two types of measures: ordinary and extraordinary. On the first hand, extraordinary measures are aimed for students with specific educational needs, it is needed a previous diagnose through a psycho-pedagogic evaluation, and a continuous monitoring for adapting the decisions taken. These measures are only applied in compulsory education. And, on the other hand; ordinary measures, have two main impacts: on the general organization of the school and on the prevention and detection of learning difficulties. From our point of view; in this case, Javier will need ordinary measures as he just needs more support than the rest of the students.

  1. Explain why you choose one type of measures or the others and describe them as accurately as possible:

We have chosen ordinary measures because we think that this type of measures will help the child to improve his weaknesses and get the best out of him.

a) Organizational measures

We believe that Javier needs help from supporting groups and insignificant curricular modification with methodological strategies, so, he needs measures on the general organization of the school; including the organization of the student’s groups, the use of spaces: strategies favoring universal accessibility and allowing him to take part of participation in learning.

      b) Curricular adaptations

We must adapt Javier’s curriculum because he has a slower rhythm of learning in linguistic expression than the rest of the classroom, we are going to choose a non-meaningful curricular adaptation because if not, he is going to feel different and as he finds difficult to establish relationships it is not good for his development. Non-meaningful curricular adaptations are modifications that we make in the program that does not affect the curriculum.

c) Supports and reinforcements.

We think that this child needs support by specialized teachers in the subjects he finds more difficulties, especially in developing linguistic skillsAmong the measures, he needs tutor guidance, developing his level of collaborative work. So, Javier would have an individualized attention thanks to reinforcement and support mechanisms.

It will also be important to have support in classroom with group splitting and flexible grouping, including the implementation of different resources and several methodological strategies.

d) Other necessary elements of the Attention to diversity Plan.

We think that Javier does not really need an Attention to diversity plan, he does not present the characteristics of child who needs this type of measures according to the actual Spanish Educational System.

This last answer is incorrect, the teacher told us that we shoul think about our answer, so me and my group read a document about Attention to Diversity Plan and realized that this child needs more elements of the Plan. I attach here a link with a document about Attention to Diversity: https://cv4.ucm.es/moodle/mod/resource/view.php?id=3257485

Let's prove our knowledge and learn about metacognition!

Wednesday 28th

On the 1st hour of the class we have a kind of an exam, it was a Kahoot. Kahoot is a game-based learning platform, used as educational technology in classrooms and other learning institutions, are multiple-choice quizzes that allow user generation and can be accessed via web browser.

The kahoot was about the topic of the group of experts activity. I realized that I did not understand some things very well because I was wrong in several questions, but the teacher explained us the questions, so now I have a clearer idea.

And on the 2nd hour we did an activity on Metacognition, first of all, we answered some questions about this topic, to try to understand what metacognition is without the teacher telling it to us. Then, he gave us a photocopy that talks about metacognition, we read it aloud and then by pairs we did a summary and he asked questions to us.

Here you have my first impression of metacognition, the photocopy and the summary we made:
